Why popular brands are registering .XXX domains

One of the concerns of leading brands across the globe now is the newly released .XXX domain extension. Reports have it that companies like Pepsi, Nike and other popular brands have already paid to reserve some of the .XXX domain names that are associated to their names. For instance, pepsi.xxx was already reserved when I checked it. (you can as well do for confirmation). Even numerous Universities were reported to have also reserved numerous .XXX domain names associated to the Universities.

Sequel to this, we need to ask, but why are all these companies purchasing a .XXX domain? Do they want to start a pornography businesss?

Well, the direct answer to the latter question is NO. And the direct explanation to give for such is simply that companies are basically interested in protecting their brand against internet eVil doers. Hey…but what do you mean, are their evil doers on internet? …like witches and wizard? Hey the internet evil doers have pure human like you and I. Their intention is to blackmail popular brands on the internet.

Such evil  will involve a porn business registering the .XXX  domain name of a popular company and branding it synonymously to the existing brand of such a popular brand. Take for instance, someone decides to establish a porn business. He then decides to register www.cocacola.xxx. So, as to make people believe that his business is just an extension (which is not) of Cocacola product lines, he then decides to brand it the same way Cocacola brands their other sites. Not only that he will also do all he can to advertise in a manner that will make it difficult to believe that Cocacola has nothing to do with his porn believe.

So, why are companies Pre-Registering?

The next question you may want to ask is why are companies reserving their .XXX names as fast as the can. Simple. They want to avoid been forced to cough out large sum of money in the near future to acquire their .XXX extension. How? There are some people on the internet whose job is to buy domain names and resell to the companies or individuals that needs them. What they do is to buy a domain like www.cocacola.xxx and then withhold it till the near future when Cocacola then realizes the need to purchase that domain name. So, instead of selling it at the normal price they bought it, they’ll insist on large sum of money. So, companies want to aviod this and the best way to do that is to pre-register  those names with ICANN.

Already, the .XXX domain names have been selling at $99.99 per year at Godaddy.com.
