Remembering the journey: The Ijebu-Igbo version

Mid 2012, my family friend, Tola, reached out to me about hosting a gathering of friends to have some heated discussions about business, our future and everything in between. Without hesitation, I responded positively and he reached out to other friends. We fixed the location and made all necessary plans.

Few weeks later, we hit the road with 3 cars filled with young and energetic guys (yeah, no lady :-)) and headed to a beautiful house in Ijebu-Igbo (a small city in Ogun State, Nigeria) where we will spend the next 3 days.

After the cleaning etc, the conversation started. We were to generate as many as possible ideas that the 8 of us would work on. We set our minds in motion with the simple assumption that we had everything possible to make the ideas happen, money, time, people etc etc. Few hours later, we had tons of ideas listed, the room was smelling of ideas. Oh, the energy from all of us. Every single soul in the room was ready to crush the world. Yours truly had a fair share of his as well, dropping tech ideas as other guys dropped ideas that range from Agriculture to Oil business (yes, oil), to logistics.

At the end of the third day, we made plans to stay in touch and ensure we kickstart at least one of the ideas generated. It wasn’t going to be about the the best idea or who dropped the best idea. I will save you the details of all those for now.

Fast forward 24+ months

We have spent the past few months working on one of those ideas (or not really). Not yet perfect, but definitely the beginning of something great that I am proud of. We have had reasons to stop. We have had several obstacles along the way. Oh, the numerous misunderstandings. Yet we stand. As one. United by one goal. Profit. Even more delighted that this yet to be “officially launched” start-up is already generating revenues 🙂

All other things aside, it reminds me that nothing, absolutely nothing, can stop a crop of determined young minds.
